LinkedIn gives you 300 characters to make a first impression. Most people waste them with "I'd like to add you to my professional network" - LinkedIn's default message that screams "I didn't bother to personalize this."
Let's fix that.
Why most connection requests fail
The average LinkedIn user receives 5-10 connection requests per week. Decision-makers and hiring managers receive far more. To stand out, your request needs to answer one question immediately: "Why should I connect with this person?"
Connection requests fail when they:
- Use the default LinkedIn message
- Lead with what you want ("I'm looking for a job...")
- Are vague about why you're connecting
- Feel like a mass-blast
The anatomy of a great connection request
Every effective connection request has three elements:
- Context - How you found them or what you have in common
- Specificity - Something concrete that shows you've done research
- Low-pressure ask - Make it easy to say yes
Here's the formula: [Context] + [Specific observation] + [Soft ask]
Templates that work
Template 1: The shared interest
Use when you genuinely share a professional interest with someone.
Hi [Name], I came across your post about [specific topic] and it really resonated - I've been working on [related thing] at [your company]. Would love to connect and follow your work.
Why it works: It's specific, shows genuine interest, and doesn't ask for anything beyond connecting.
Template 2: The company admirer
Use when you're interested in a specific company and want to connect with someone there.
Hi [Name], I've been following [Company]'s work on [specific project or product] - really impressive what your team has accomplished with [specific detail]. I'd love to connect and learn more about [Company]'s approach.
Why it works: People are proud of their work. Acknowledging specific accomplishments builds instant rapport.
Template 3: The mutual connection
Use when you share a connection with someone.
Hi [Name], I see we're both connected with [Mutual Connection] - [they mentioned you / we met at the same event / we share similar backgrounds]. Would love to connect!
Why it works: Mutual connections provide instant credibility and trust.
Template 4: The content engager
Use after engaging with someone's content (a post, article, or comment).
Hi [Name], I really enjoyed your take on [specific point from their content]. Your perspective on [detail] was something I hadn't considered. Would love to connect and continue following your insights.
Why it works: You've already shown genuine interest through engagement before sending the request.
Template 5: The career changer
Use when you're transitioning into a new field and want to learn from someone in that space.
Hi [Name], I'm transitioning into [field] from [current field] and have been researching [specific topic they're known for]. Your background in [specific area] is exactly the kind of path I'm interested in learning about. Would love to connect.
Why it works: It's honest, specific, and frames the connection as learning rather than asking for a job.
What to do after they accept
Getting the connection is step one. Here's what to do next:
Don't immediately pitch
The fastest way to lose a new connection's goodwill is to follow up with a long message asking for a referral or job. Wait at least a few days.
Engage with their content first
Like, comment on, or share their posts. Build familiarity before asking for anything.
When you do reach out, be direct but respectful
After building some rapport:
Hi [Name], thanks for connecting! I've been enjoying your posts about [topic]. I'm currently exploring opportunities in [area] and noticed [Company] has an opening for [role]. Would you be open to a brief chat about what it's like working there? Completely understand if you're too busy - I appreciate the connection either way.
Key elements:
- Reference your existing engagement
- Be specific about what you want
- Give them an easy out
- Express gratitude regardless
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sending the same message to 50 people - personalization takes time, but it's the whole point
- Making it about you immediately - lead with interest in them, not your needs
- Writing a novel - you have 300 characters. Use them wisely.
- Connecting and ghosting - if someone accepts, at minimum engage with their content
- Getting discouraged by rejections - a 30-40% acceptance rate is excellent
